Introduction: Why is it
important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually
and physically? What areas do you need to develop to achieve the goals you have
for yourself?
It
is important because for any professional in a career they should incorporate
what they do for a living into their own lives. I am a personal trainer and I
practice what I preach. Being fit and mentally sound gives me the confidence to
guide my clients into the direction of being fit and healthy. I see myself as
an example to be physically and mentally fit because my clients look up to me.
If I was overweight and out of shape people would not take me serious. I think
reading text books on integral health is a great start, but until you practice
it you will never human flourishing.
For
me I need to find balance for all three. I am physically fit and that seems to
overpower me psychological and spiritually. I find myself focusing on those two
areas last. I have started to meditate which has helped me find some inner
peace when I find myself stressed.
Assessment:
How have you assessed your health in each domain? How do you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?
How have you assessed your health in each domain? How do you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?
I have assessed my health in each domain by thinking
about what areas in my life I need to improve on and the changes I want to
make. I have always felt as long as I am still learning there is room for
improvement. It is good to have balance of all three. I would score my
spiritually at a 6 because I haven’t spent a lot of time focusing on this area
of my life. When I think about it I will pray but I need to be more consistent.
When it comes to psychological I would score myself at a 7 because I do
practice meditating and breathing techniques to help calm my thoughts when I am
stressed. My physical area of wellness would be a 10. Only because my life has
always revolved around eating and being fit. I have always felt that if I am
physically fit then my mind will be fit also. But I am learning that the two
are separate and I have to focus on them separately. I a lot of practice and
learning to go to reach long term flourishing.
Goal
development:
List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual
List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual
My goal for my physical wellness and psychological
wellness is to train my body and mind to prepare to run an ultra-race. The race
would consist of running 40 miles in under 7 hours is my goal. I know I can
train all day but if my mind is not in it then I will hit the wall. My spiritual
wellness would be to pray more on a daily basis and make it a habit.
Practices
for personal health:
What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains; Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual. Provide at least two examples of exercises or practices in each domain. Explain how you will implement each example.

To foster growth on physical wellness I would implement a
new exercise technique at least once a week I would branch out and try
something new. I run every day and do boot camps so I would like to start using
different muscle. I want to implement vitamins into my diet. I would always
start but then I would forget to take them and then fall off track.
Psychological wellness I feel there will always be room
for improvement. Subtle mind practice is something I would like to keep
practicing until I can get it down and feel comfortable doing it. A lot of the
time it is hard to let my mind relax and forget about my thoughts. The
transforming exercise I really enjoy and plan on doing from here on out. The
transforming exercise made me feel empowered. Both of these exercises I will
practice so they will come natural like meditating.
Spiritual wellness I would like to get back into church
and give back to the community. I have always had this calmness when I would
attend church and that feeling would stay with me all day. I plan on helping
out and giving back to my community that has been so generous to me. I want to
give back and help those who are not so fortunate.
Commitment:
How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long-term practices for health and wellness?
How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long-term practices for health and wellness?
I have a good plan set in front of me and as long as I
stay focused and not get caught up in the day to day stressors I will be
successful. I have already started my training for the ultra-run so that plan
is in motion. My psychological wellness will far be my toughest to stay on top
of, but as long as I manage my time I will be able to fit it in. My spiritual
wellness will be easy to incorporate because I know I need this in order to
have a fulfilling life.
Great project Krisha! Good luck with getting back into the church. I think that it is not only a great way to grow spiritually, but another place you can use to incorporate your desire to give back to the community. If it is like most churches, they have plenty of service projects to help others within the community. Even acts of kindness can help us grow spiritually, much like the loving-kindness exercises we have been doing throughout these units. There is always a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when helping others. Good luck in the future, it has been a pleasure reading your blog throughout this course!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post. I like the fact that your passion for exercise and nutrition shines through and you are able to help others. You are an example of someone who psychologically developed their talent in life and with spiritual guidence plus physical strength was able to take something you love and turn it into a business that you now use for teaching purposes and motivating others. Good luck to you in the future. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI love your post. I agree with you that you have to practice what you preach. I am happy to hear that you are doing that already. I think it is great you are getting back in the church. Serving others can bring so much happiness in your life. I know it works for me. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! We do have to practice what we preach, can't teach someone to do something or ask someone to do something with out doing it yourself. Good luck with everything
ReplyDeleteHello Kisha,
ReplyDeletePractice what you preach doesn't come easy for many because they think that everyone can lead and not have to do the same as they teach others. I have had trouble staying on track and leading people into what I have done for myself only because I have fallen off the wagon so many times and no one wants someone that falls off every time. I have had dreams of becoming a personal trainer and have had problems making ends meet to complete that goal. It seems like that so much gets in the way of everyday life and then the goals get put on hold. The one goal for me that hasn't been put on hold forever is graduation from college.
