This week has been rather challenging with the kids out of school, family coming into town, school, and work so this exercise couldn't have come at a better time. Our assignment this week was to "Meeting Asclepius". Sitting silently and listening I began to feel at peace and tranquil. I felt a power of energy and all my tension was released. When I was done I felt a since of clarity the things that were bothering seemed not so big. This exercise helped me to be more mindful with the quality of my thoughts. It helped me to be positive and push out the negative thoughts. It would be nice to have a mentor to call on to help me with all my questions and to help guide me down the right path.
The saying "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" this is a great saying. I agree that if someone is a professional and is giving advice on optimal wellness then they should have achieved this in their life. You have to lead by example to gain respect from your peers, clients, and patients. As a professional you have an obligation to your clients to set a positive example of health, psychologically, physical, and spiritually. They look up to you for guidance and answers. You have to live by what you teach. For me to have more growth I need to get rid of the old and in with the new.
Kisha,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. I think this exercise was great and it really helped me to relax and find the positive in my life. It really was a stressful week with the holiday, school, and work. I really enjoyed this exercise. I also agree with you that as a professional we should have achieved in our personal lives what we hope to teach to others. You can't help others if you don't fully understand what you are asking them to do. I like that you said that you need to get rid of the old and in with the new because I feel that we must let go of our past and be able to open our hearts and minds to the future, and to forgive and let be.
Kisha, great post. When things are chaotic around you I feel that is the perfect time to sit down and have a moment to yourself. So I'm glad you found this exercise useful! I also agree that as a teacher of wellness a person must practice what they preach. It is just like no one wants to go to an overweight personal trainer. The same can be said for areas of psychological or spiritual wellness.

Having a mentor that you can call on is a great idea! I was able to find a couple local organizations that offer community meditation sessions (usually once a week). They're typically free and are run by volunteers from local studios but it's been a great resource for me. It's an opportunity to talk with people at varying stages of their meditation practice and it's been great for consistency and guidance!
ReplyDeleteI liken the meditation to exercise for the body. One cannot lead someone in good form if they have not practiced it themselves. I have mentors in fitness and I am a mentor to others. The more we practice our meditation, the more apt we are to guide someone else to peace.
ReplyDeleteI agree, if you do not practice these methods yourself you will not fully understand the barriers or difficulties associated with it and then you would have no way of helping someone who came to you with these concerns. While you may know what words to say to encourage them or tell them what to do, if you do not fully understand the concepts you cannot really connect with the person in a meaningful or unifying way.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you. I know that when someone is trying to teach me or lead me through something but they haven't reached it them self I don't seem to listen to them as well. I usually blow them off. Good luck

Hello Kishad,
ReplyDeleteI too agree that this holiday has been a very hectic one and that the exercise was really an I opener for me to see how relaxed I can get. With this exercise I learned that it really needs to be a quiet place of peace. There are so many distractions around you during the holidays that when someone wants to have that time to just let everything go and can be hard to master. I understand that a lot of students are going to go the route of being a leader by example and for the saying does go for some things like homework to show my children that if I can do so can they but, when it comes to health and wellness that a person doesn't always have to lead the way to help others. I can advocate others on different areas that I practice and then suggest for the other part that they need help with recommend someone else. I know that a lot of people like the one stop shop but, if you have clients that want to judge you and then you really have no choice but, to send them to someone who can better serve them. For me, it would be like in the initial visit finding out what they really need to work on and make a plan and going forward to reach simple and easy goals until the big challenge has been met. Everyone needs to remember that life isn't always going to be ease and everyone isn't going to be acceptable but, we all need to find a way to get along.
